As a result of the innovative Volleyball Empowerment initiative implemented by the FIVB, the Mozambique Volleyball Federation has been able to take advantage of various projects since 2017, including those pertaining to the training of volleyball coaches and the provision of volleyball equipment.
The FIVB provided assistance in the form of 12 months of coach support for the years 2021 and 2022, as well as the recruitment of Brazilian coach Alexandre Pontel. The training and empowerment of national coaches, as well as an improvement in tactical awareness and outcomes on the court, have both benefited significantly from Pontel’s experience competing at the highest level of beach volleyball. In addition, the FIVB has contributed to the purchase of volleyball equipment by donating one hundred Mikasa volleyballs in 2017 and 2021, fifty Mikasa volleyballs in 2019, and a variety of equipment in 2020.
Mozambique’s beach volleyball players now have access to the level of training and equipment necessary to begin focusing on qualifying for major events such as age group and senior World Championships, as well as future editions of the Olympic Games. This was made possible thanks to the support of the FIVB.
Dr. Ary S. Graca, President of the FIVB, made the following statement:
The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) is still dedicated to improving the overall level of volleyball played around the world. We are able to enhance participation and access for everybody by reinvesting the money that is made from the sport back into the sport, as well as by providing the expertise and equipment that is needed.
“We are thrilled with the development that has already been made by athletes of all ages owing to the hard work of Coach Alexandre Pontel, who has instilled a deeper technical knowledge into beach volleyball players across the country of Mozambique. We are looking forward to watching the future generation of beach volleyball players from Mozambique compete at major championships.
Mozambique Volleyball Federation President Mahomed Vala said:
“The FIVB’s continued assistance has made a significant impact to the development of our national team and the promotion of beach volleyball throughout the country, helping us to accelerate the growth of the sport,” said a member of the national beach volleyball squad.
“Coach Pontel has developed a developing structure with a clear pathway from schools all the way up to the national team level.”
The Head Coach, Alexandre Pontel, stated that
“The assistance that has been provided to us by the FIVB has made it possible for us to initiate the process of building a solid foundation of junior and senior athletes who are now able to concentrate on growing as players as a result of specialized coaching and increased accessibility made possible by the provision of equipment support.
“We are now able to prepare for the future, and one of our goals is to compete at big junior and senior tournaments, including the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 28.”
