The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has extended an offer to Aleksandr Butko, a former member of the Russia Men’s National Volleyball Team and current suspect in a doping scandal, to lower the severity of his suspension if he confesses to the offense.
Butko, who won gold at the London Olympics in 2012 despite testing positive for a prohibited substance in a test that was conducted in 2014, will be able to return to competition in April 2023 so long as certain conditions are met.
“The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has offered Butko’s lawyers to sign a settlement agreement, which includes acknowledgment of fault on the side of the athlete and disqualification for a year – until April 15, 2023. “At the same time, he will be permitted to return to training on February 15, which is the rule of WADA (World Anti-doping Agency),” stated the player’s agent, Dmitriy Rezvanov.
Butko, a 36-year-old setter, has high expectations that the suspension will be cut even further, and for this reason, his attorneys (the same ones who defended Dmitriy Muserskiy) are still working with the FIVB to secure a lower punishment. Butko has every intention of carrying on with his career, despite the fact that he is well past the typical retirement age for a professional athlete, and he may even lend a hand to a club for the remainder of the current campaign.
Remember that Butko has been waiting for a judgement in the case of the use of a prohibited substance discovered while he was playing for Lokomotiv for more than six months at this point. Butko has been playing professionally with Zenit-Kazan (2016–2021) and Kuzbass during the course of the last few years (2021–22). As a member of the Russia National Team, he was victorious in the following competitions: the 2012 Olympics, the 2011 FIVB World Cup, the 2011 FIVB World League, and the 2017 CEV European Championship.
